Democracy in Action

On Wednesday evening, Boys State Citizens gathered for Party Day. Divided into the Federalists and Nationalists, Party Members heard speeches from nominees for various state positions including Governor, Lt. Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, Treasurer, the Commissioner of Agriculture, and the Commissioner of Insurance. Nominees spent time swaying voters with passionate speeches and campaigning until a simple majority was achieved. Chanting from supporters of the nominees echoed throughout the auditoriums, adding to the competitive atmosphere that accompanied Party Day.

After a simple majority was found for every position in both parties, those who won were interviewed by the Press. We asked them four simple questions: How do you feel after your win? Do you have anything to say to your opponent? Why do you believe your party will win the state office? How will you improve your campaign going forward to the state level?

Candidates from both the Nationalist and Federalist parties answered these questions with both humility and competitive passion. Many of the winners on both sides wished their opponents good luck, commended their own party’s faith in them, and were confident in their ability to deliver at the state office elections.

The nominees for Governor were particularly fired up. They spoke with passion and listed their experiences and reasonings with high energy, blazing speeches, and will to serve the people. The winning candidates for Governor, Hudson Smith and Joshua Ludlam were both extremely high octane and will move on to state elections, as will all of the nominees who won. Congratulations to all nominees and best of luck at state elections.
