Louisiana Boys State is home to many forms of government and organization; the city and parish governments in particular are two of the most interesting. Why? Because they pass “ordinances,” laws, or decrees for their city and parish based on the needs and wants of their citizens. The Parish of Cane had one of the most interesting ordinances, passed in response to a Citizen playing music. This Citizen of Cane Parish walked around the halls playing music during the early hours of the morning, which upset his fellow Citizens. One named Brady Gaydos said in an interview, “I don’t like the music. It rushes me in the morning and when trying to sleep. We don’t need that long to get ready.”
Even with the expressed distaste of his fellow citizens and an entire ordinance passed to try and stop him, the Citizen did not stop. The morning after the ordinance was passed, he continued to make noise. In an interview we conducted with him this morning, he expressed his determination and willingness to hype up the parish. “I’m used to other summer camps where we wake up bright and early with a lot of hype. I got here and I was told that it wasn’t like that, that we weren’t supposed to rush people until just before muster time. I felt that was a little counterintuitive because if we don’t rush people, we lose a lot of the energy and hype from people who just woke up.”
The Parish of Bogafalaya also passed a funny ordinance. There was such a problem of mispronouncing Bogafalaya as “Boga Felucia.” Citizens of rival Parish Atchafalaya had some comments on this ordinance.
“We don’t have that problem in Atchafalaya. The mispronunciation problem in Boga is funny. We’re definitely gonna use that to our advantage.”
