Every parish across LABS sent school board members to voice their opinions on the posting of the Ten Commandments in classrooms. The majority of the parishes voiced options against the new proposal. Many similar statements were given, mainly involving separation to church and state, freedom of religion, and potential oppression of non-christian students. While many parishes were against the mandate, they did not have objections to teachers and students expressing their beliefs in productive and appropriate ways.
After parishes voiced their takes, the BESE board opened questions to the public, including parents of LABS citizens that were in attendance. Jessica Raley (high school teacher in Bossier Parish) brought up the issue of paying for these posters. Schools boards are already having to make cuts, so she believes that it is illogical to present a poster that should potentially not even be looked at by students. Another point brought up by elementary administrator Celeste LeBoeuf was that some of the content of the Ten Commandments is not appropriate for elementary schools.
Overall, the BESE board came to the decision that best reflected the opinion of the room, and they will be continuing to get public opinion on future issues.
