Monday, LABS was thrilled to welcome a special guest from Washington DC: Senator Bill Cassidy. A LABS alumnus himself, Senator Cassidy shared both his experience as a young leader as well advice for all the future leaders in the boys state program. The Daily Magnolia also scored an exclusive interview with the senator following the proceedings in the ball room. Here’s what he had to say on three hot topics.
Becoming a Leader
Senator Cassidy’s overarching message to LABS was to communicate, work together, and build connections with others. He cited his time as doctor for the uninsured as a pivotal part of his success, and encouraged all of LABS to succeed in other areas before moving to politics. He also spoke of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, a monumental law that he led the charge on. This bill would offer billions in aid to Louisiana to fortify our roads, highways, coast, internet, power grid and evacuation routes to ensure all citizens are safe. When asked how best to communicate with others, Senator Cassidy had three words he said leaders should follow:
“Be trustworthy, be clear, and be passionate.”
Louisiana’s Energy Sector
It’s no secret that Louisiana’s economy is heavily dependent upon creating energy, especially with oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. Senator Cassidy himself said that “8% of Louisiana jobs are in energy production.” In the press’ exclusive interview, Senator Cassidy shared that he had plans to open up plenty of jobs within energy sector and “unleash Louisiana energy.” Senator Cassidy even mentioned a call he received from President Biden announcing his support. All these new energy sources would have little to no emissions, even including a specialized process to harvest natural gas that leads to net-zero carbon emissions.
Service
Senator Cassidy’s main reason for taking office is what he talked to the citizens about the most: serving others. As mentioned before, he worked as a doctor for those without medical insurance. He also worked to give Hepatitis-B vaccines to over 36,000 children in and around the Baton Rouge area. He gave medical lectures to aspiring doctors and is now fighting hard to lift Louisiana residents out of poverty. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill mentioned before is said to lead to better life, improved roads and bridges, and the growth of business better than ever before. He’s also a big supporter of social security and fights to ensure Louisiana retirees are taken care of.
LABS was very happy to host a state senator at the program, especially a returning citizen. The Daily Magnolia is also very grateful to Senator Cassidy and his team for the exclusive talk with him. Thank you Senator Cassidy!
